About Maternidad La Luz

Maternidad La Luz is a community-based, Texas state-licensed birth center and a Texas Department of State Health Services approved midwifery school, focusing on providing hands on clinical skills and  training to budding midwives working through the Portfolio Experience Process (PEP), as presented by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM).

Since its inception in 1987, Maternidad La Luz (MLL) has been both a birth center and a school of midwifery, deeply rooted in the borderland communities of El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico. Maternidad La Luz strives to foster a warm and supportive environment, reflecting the dynamic needs of the clients and students that we serve.

Maternidad La Luz offers choices in pregnancy and childbirth in a peaceful home-like birth center facility in El Paso, Texas. Supported by regular discussions and informed choice, clients are welcome to explore birthing options such as water birth, and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), all accompanied by compassionate midwifery care.  The staff and students at Maternidad La Luz care for approximately 30 to 50 birthing women a month and since opening, have attended over 15,000 births of women of all ages and lifestyles.

Mission and Philosophy

Bringing a child into the world is a normal and natural event of life and it is a privilege to witness, every day, women having the ability to grow and birth their babies naturally. Our mission is to provide excellent health care to pregnant, birthing, and postpartum women and their families in a birth center setting where we promote excellence in direct entry midwifery education.

Goals of the Birth Center

The Birth Center at Maternidad La Luz provides quality services for the El Paso, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and Southern New Mexico community. Our goals include:
• To provide safe, affordable care by trained direct-entry midwives
• To educate and empower women regarding childbirth based on the principles of informed choice
• To establish a well-organized, well-managed birth center that makes an essential contribution to the community
• To provide employment, job security and professional advancement for well-trained midwives
• To provide an opportunity to student midwives for hands-on learning
• To maintain a healthy and safe workplace

History

Maternidad La Luz was born in 1987 through the compassionate care of midwife, Deborah J. Kaley. Women from the ages of twelve to forty-six have had satisfying, natural birth experiences.  The majority of clients are Mexican or Mexican-American who choose MLL based on the recommendation of family and friends who have previously given birth at the center.  Other reasons include:
• a long-standing tradition of midwifery in Mexico
• a desire for woman-centered and women-attended care
• a belief in the normalcy and naturalness of birth and motherhood
• economic considerations

Since March 1987, more than 500 students, from over a dozen countries, have received professional midwifery training at Maternidad La Luz, and have gone on to provide safe birthing alternatives to women worldwide.
