Admissions

Students must be able to fulfill all prerequisites and send in a complete application and fee to be considered for any Maternidad La Luz clinical placement.  A director, a staff midwife, and a student review all the applications.  Once the application is reviewed, MLL will telephone the applicant to arrange for a phone interview with a director and a student currently in the clinical placement as part of the admissions process.  This gives the applicant an understanding of the clinical placement from a student’s perspective. There is also an interview in Spanish to assess the applicant’s ability to communicate in Spanish.  Although fluency is not required, a second Spanish interview may be necessary before acceptance into the clinical placement. Applicants deemed unable to provide adequate care in the Spanish language will not be accepted into the clinical placement.

Applicants are notified of acceptance at least three months in advance of the requested start date.  A waiting list is maintained of eligible students who will be notified as openings in the clinical placement become available.  Students are encouraged to submit their applications four to six months prior to the program start date in order to ensure placement in the preferred month.  However, Maternidad La Luz has a rolling admissions policy and will consider later applications if space is still available.

Once accepted, students receive an acceptance letter with the dates of their clinical placement and useful information about Maternidad La Luz and El Paso, Texas.  Students must send the deposit within the time stated in their acceptance letter in order to secure a place in the program.  Student Handbooks are sent two months prior to the start date.

Qualified midwifery students are accepted without discrimination in regard to sex, race, marital status, religion, ethnic origin, creed, age, sexual orientation/preference or physical ability. Maternidad La Luz attempts to provide reasonable access to all qualified students with disabilities.
