Maternidad La Luz offers several clinical placement options for those with a calling to the art and practice of midwifery, with the capacity to accommodate a maximum of twenty-five students. The Maternidad La Luz midwifery clinical placement is a direct entry placement providing an integrated model clinical training with occasional academic classes. The academic classes assist students in completing the
Skills Verification Form 201a. The clinical placement is flexible, giving students the opportunity to make educational choices based on their individual midwifery goals.
NARM Phase One Program
After attending classes in infection control and cultural competency, students will do 24-hour shifts two or three times a week until they meet the NARM Phase I requirement of observation of 10 births.  This clinical placement is scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and MLL.
NARM Phase Two and Three Program
This is a six-to-nine-month clinical placement for those exploring the profession of midwifery and for midwifery students and apprentices who are striving to obtain the Certified Professional Midwife credential via PEP.  This placement, which open on a monthly basis provides the student midwife with the opportunity to learn and acquire basic midwifery skills, attend births, catch babies, and provide prenatal and postpartum care. Licensed midwives sign off all skills and knowledge gained during this placement.  Maternidad La Luz has notary public on premises who notarizes student documents at no additional cost.  The clinical placement includes:

  • Attendance at 20 births as assistant under supervision, which includes assist, documenter, and gofer roles, as well as assisting at 20 newborn exams.
  • Once a student completes the NARM assistant under supervision requirements, they will begin the primary under supervision requirement.
  • Providing prenatal and postpartum care to clients to complete the required 25 prenatals and 10 postpartum visits as assistant under supervision
  • Providing prenatal and postpartum care to clients to complete the required 75 prenatals and 40 postpartum visits as primary under supervision
  • Begin attending births as primary under supervision
  • Students attending phase I and phase II clinical placement do not take full continuity of care clients (COC)
  • Students attending phase III clinical placement may take on 3 (COC) and 6 parital COC per 3-month period
  • Signing off of NARM skills and requirements
  • A written evaluation and certificate at the end of the program.
Hospital and Home births
NARM Requires students to have two hospital and five home births. It is each student's responsibility to acquire these on their own, outside of their clinical placement at MLL. MLL will not assist you in meeting these requirements.

NARM Application
It is the student's responsibility to fill out the NARM application and any NARM forms and ensure it is filled our correctly. Any corrections that NARM requires is solely the responsibility of the student.

Short-Term Placements

Maternidad La Luz will accept applications from individuals who desire a short-term visit. Any placement from one week to less than three months is considered to be short-term. This opportunity is open to those investigating a career in midwifery, experienced midwives who want to observe life in a busy birth center setting and others interested in the clinical placement at Maternidad La Luz. While at MLL, short-term students may attend births as observers, shadow students in the clinic, and attend first or second quarter classes. They will not be working in the primary birth attendant role, and therefore should not expect to be catching babies during their stay.

Students from MEAC Schools

Maternidad La Luz will accept applications from individuals who are enrolled in a MEAC school. It is your responsibility to ask your school what their requirements are regarding our midwives/preceptors. Maternidad La Luz is not responsible if you did not get all the information from your school before beginning your clinical placement. It is your responsibility to have all the clinical paperwork your school requires.  You will complete your clinical placement using your MEAC schools requirements.  Any placement from one week to less than three months is considered to be short-term. Maternidad La Luz will accept applications from individuals who desire a Spanish Observation placement. This opportunity is open to students wanting to develop their skills in the Spanish language. Students will shadow a fluent Spanish speaking student and learn how appointments and births are done in Spanish as well as learn how to perform clinic work in Spanish. The student themself will not perform any clinical work during this period and will instead focus solely on learning the language and culture. The student will dedicate their time to learning Spanish utilizing the variety of Spanish language resources found in our Student Catalog. Student level of comprhension and communication will be assessed when both the student and midwife feel they are ready to do so. If the student can lead a prenatal and postpartum appointment in Spanish, they may apply for MLL's clinical placement.
